The Guardian 14kW is where standby generators stop being 'essentials only' and start being 'most of the house.' It's the smallest Generac that can start and run a 2-ton central air conditioning system. One other thing worth knowing: the 14kW produces the same output on natural gas and propane: 14 kW on both.

What This Generator Keeps Running

2-ton central AC (including startup surge), refrigerator, freezer, gas furnace blower, sump pump, 3–4 lighting circuits, home office, kitchen appliances (stagger with AC), CPAP.

Limitations: A 3-ton AC is tight; the startup surge leaves little headroom. If your AC is 3-ton or larger, the 18kW gives you breathing room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a 14kW generator run central air?
A 2-ton system — yes, including startup surge. A 3-ton — technically possible but tight. If your AC is 3-ton or larger, the 18kW or 22kW is the safer choice.
Is 14kW enough for a 2,000 sq ft house?
With a 2-ton AC and gas heat, yes. Covers AC, kitchen, lights, and most circuits. All-electric homes (electric heat, range, water heater) will find 14kW tight: look at 18–22kW.
Does the 14kW lose power on natural gas?
No. unusual for this industry. The Guardian 14kW produces 14 kW on both propane and natural gas. Most generators drop 10–12% on NG.
